Vintage 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century quilts from the significant Western Reserve Historical Society collection will be on display for the first time in nearly 20 years. Highlights of the 30 quilts on display include an 18th-century pieced quilt made from dressmaking remnants and worn garments, and a 19th-century presentation quilt made by the Daughters of the American Revolution and presented to President and Mrs. William McKinley. A third significant piece is a Centennial/Bicentennial quilt that was 100 years in the making. Donor Arnold Hegy Savage's great aunt pieced portions of this quilt in 1876, when she was six years old. In 1976, Mr. Savage completed the quilt using blocks made by his aunt and fabrics contemporary to the original quilt.

Pattern ID
January 23, 2010 - May 9, 2010

Karl and Bertl Arnstein Galleries

Certain patterns seem unmistakable: the geometric diamonds of a Navajo blanket, the neatly arranged vines of damask wallpaper, or the interlocking initials of the Louis Vuitton logo. But what happens when you transform the classically sober brown and tan Louis Vuitton pattern into an explosion of bright colors intermingled with Japanese animation forms? Or pair oversized hip-hop clothing with damask wallpaper patterns? Combine fussy Victorian style clothing with vibrant, African prints? The meanings and origins of these patterns are transformed into something new.

Over the last two decades, artists have increasingly turned to pattern and dress as a language with which to communicate who they are and where they come from. The experiences of culture clash, immigration and multi-ethnicity in our globalized world have driven artists to use this visual language to chart their personal and communal histories. Through pattern and dress, artists compress time and cross geographic boundaries to illustrate the various influences that inform their cultural identities. The artists freely mix motifs from popular culture, history and art history to transform the meanings of patterns. Pattern ID features fifteen artists of diverse origins who have seized on pattern and dress as powerful visual connectors between themselves, their histories and their audiences.

"The artists use pattern and dress to take up the 21st century challenge of locating one's place in society against the backdrop of globalization," said Ellen Rudolph, the museum's curator of exhibitions. "Many of the artists in the exhibition have migrated from one culture to another, be it national, ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, political or religious. Rather than trade one identity for another, the artists in Pattern ID reveal ways in which identity can be cumulative."

This exhibition is organized by the Akron Art Museum. Its presentation is made possible by a generous gifts from the Adam Fund of Akron Community Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Herb and Dianne Newman, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Toby D. Lewis Philanthropic Fund.

Looking for the American Dream: Andrew Borowiec's Ohio Photographs
February 20, 2010 - May 30, 2010
Judith Bear Isroff & Fred and Laura Ruth Bidwell Galleries

Andrew Borowiec has been photographing the social landscape of Middle America for more than two decades. This exhibition contrasts his traditional gelatin silver photography with his recent exploration of color photography and digital printing.

One gallery will feature around 25 prints, most of them from his series Along the Ohio. It was shot during the 1980s and 1990s but has never been exhibited in Northeast Ohio. These modestly scaled, black and white prints show everyday life in the small, mostly blue-collar, historic towns along the Ohio River. Borowiec has described these landscapes as "both exotic and authentically American."

The other gallery will debut around 12 large-scale images from Borowiec's newest series, The New Heartland. It explores suburban and rural development in the Midwest including, among other phenomena, "lifestyle centers"-newly minted commercial developments adjoining shopping with housing. These planned communities often apply a veneer of historic style to buildings and urban plans that are thoroughly contemporary.

Borowiec has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Ohio Arts Council and his work is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Princeton University Art Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Akron Art Museum and Cleveland Museum of Art, among others. Borowiec was just named a Distinguished Professor of Art at The University of Akron Myers School of Art, where he has taught since 1984.

This exhibition is organized by the Akron Art Museum and supported by the museum's Evelyne Shaffer Endowment for Exhibitions.

orchid varieties you won't see just anywhere. This year's show is all about viewing
these exotic beauties in surprising ways: in a dramatic lobby display, in the naturalistic
landscape of the Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse, and through the lens of a camera. Our new orchid photography contest, held in conjunction with cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer, will allow participants to have their work posted on cleveland.com; 5 winners' work will be shown in an article in The Plain Dealer's Inside & Out section and at the Garden in April. Start your Orchid Mania visit by immersing yourself in a stylish,
"industrial chic" orchid forest designed by Garden Directors Lloyd Taplin and Tasha Tobin. From there, look for rare orchids in the Eppig Gallery and immerse yourself in the lush tropical beauty of the Glasshouse - it makes a perfect natural theater. Last year, our guests flipped for orchids in the Glasshouse: it's like taking a flower-filled tropical vacation without leaving town! As always, the show promises popular orchids such as Cymbidiums and slipper orchids.

A small exhibit highlighting our favorite dog. Learn about Balto and the heroic dogs and mushers of Alaska from the 1925 Serum Run to the Iditarod of today. After enjoying hero status and traveling all over North Armerica, Balto and his fellow sled dogs were eventually forgotten and sold to a vaudeville show owner in California who mistreated them. A businessman from Cleveland, George Kimble, heard about the dogs' plight and rallied his hometown to rescue these amazing animals. Balto and six other sled dogs were soon moved to the Cleveland Zoo, where they lived out the rest of their lives well cared for and loved. Balto's remains were preserved and are on permanent display at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Masterworks in Miniature Opens March 5 with 200 Outstanding Works by Major Artists (3/10/2010 - ...

Gallery One's famed Masterworks in Miniature opens Friday, March 5, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a wine
and cheese celebration and the exhibition of 200 small and truly outstanding works of art - created
by today's most collected painters.
Now in its 19th year, Masterworks features original paintings by Bev Doolittle, Edna Hibel, Carl
Brenders, Terry Isaac, Dean Morrissey, Guy Coheleach, Simon Bull, Morgan Weistling, Robert
Finale, Trish McKinney, Charles Wysocki and more than 100 other top artists. Amazingly, works
are priced from $300.
While some Masterworks will fit in the palm of one's hand, others are as large as 9" x 12." A rare
few may be a bit larger. Regardless of size, all are exquisitely detailed and represent the high
quality expected of the individual artists. Genres include wildlife, portraits, still life, landscape,
abstract and fantasy.
The artists are from all over the world. Some are miniaturists, specifically known for small originals.
Many like Brenders and Doolittle have carved out enviable reputations for full-sized originals
- at prices that do not fit the average wallet.
"When such top artists are 'forced' to work small, their prices become really affordable," said Alan
Brown, gallery president. "Collectors of limited editions often find that they can collect such miniatures for
less than prints by the very same artists."
The demand for the miniatures is so intense that, for many of the entries, prospective buyers
must submit "intent-to-purchase" forms from which lucky purchasers are drawn at the close of the
event. The other half of the exhibit is available for purchase on a first come, first served basis.
All of the works will be on exhibit until Saturday, March 20 when the event closes. In addition, the
entire exhibit can be viewed at www.galleryone.com along with detailed information regarding
each work and each artist. Information about purchasing will be on the web, as well.
Regardless of how they are used, they are perfect jewels.
For additional information, call 800.621.1141 or 440.255.1200 or visit www.galleryone.com.
Gallery One is located at 7003 Center St. (Rt. 615), Mentor between Routes 90 and 2. The gallery
is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

THERE WILL BE A DISCUSSION SESSION AFTER THE FILM

2008 (Not Rated) 100 min. France, Tunis/subtitles
Director: Karin Albou
Cast: Lizzie Brochere, Olympe Borval, Simon Abkarian

Two young women find that their differences bring them closer during a difficult time in this drama from writer-director Karin Albou. Nour and Myriam grew up in the same neighborhood in Tunis. As they've grown into adulthood they've stayed close friends, even though Nour is a Muslim and Myriam is Jewish. It's 1942 and Tunis is under occupation by Axis forces, which makes life difficult for both women. The German authorities have prevented Khalid, Nour's fiancée, from getting a job, forcing them to postpone their wedding. Myriam's family must pay exorbitant fines for being Jewish, which may lead her into a marriage of convenience to a wealthy physician many years her senior. While Myriam sees no way out of her desperate situation, Nour finds that the Nazi propaganda circulated throughout the community is piquing her worst suspicions about Jewish stereotypes. But as Nour and Myriam sink deeper into their personal crises, they begin to understand how badly they need one another's support. Film critic of The Los Angeles Times, Kevin Thomas, concludes his review with this observation: "Albou brings to life a Tunis in which oppressed, large populations suffer from a lack of education that make them vulnerable to rabble-rousing propaganda. Yet in the face of all this adversity the bond between women just may hold."

"A sensuous, astonishing, and memorable film about the different shades of love in sexuality, friendship, and marriage." - Frederic and Mary Brussat, SPIRITUALITY AND PRACTICE

WZAK presents Chrisette Michele with Laura Izibor and Lem Payne (3/12/2010)

It has been two years since sultry voiced singer Chrisette Michele released her stunning gold-certified debut I Am. Blessed with a gorgeous instrument and described as a "soulful songbird" by Entertainment Weekly, the Long Island native proved to the world that she could live up to the hype. Nominated for a BET Award for Best New Artist as well as two Grammy's, I Am was both a critical success and a fans delight. Since the release of her I Am, Chrisette has always toured endlessly with her band: the Truth and other R&B singers, Raheem DeVaughn, and Solange Knowles. "To me, nothing is more important than touring," she says. "Communicating with the audience through song can be magical. Singing in the studio is one thing, but you must be able to bring it to the stage too."

Sara Haze and Band in Concert (3/12/2010)

Although pop, rock artist Sara Haze is surrounded by industry giants with everyone from Randy Jackson to Gene Simmons consulting on her music, it's Sara herself running the show. Most notably, this sun-bleached blonde Southern California girl is writing the music.

Fans of MTV's reality phenomenon The Hills responded en masse with over 300,000 hits on Sara's MySpace page when her song "My Own Hands To Hold" was used to illustrate a scene depicting a rocky relationship. With piano-driven chords and a haunting melody line, this song speaks to anyone who didn't get a storybook ending to a relationship.

Sara has impressed industry executives everywhere. At CMW (Canadian Music Week), Sara was joined on stage by Grammy Award Winning Producer Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette, Dave Matthews, No Doubt) who performed one of her songs with her. Sara has also performed at the CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival in 2009.

Sara Haze will be performing along with her band for a night of great live music at The Winchester Music Hall.
