            <title>Sustainable Fashion:Exploring the Paradox (4/29/2011 - 3/18/2012)</title>
            <link>http://cleveland.artsinohio.com/preview.php?id=75630&amp;type=e</link>
<description>The exhibition &quot;Sustainable Fashion: Exploring the Paradox&quot; is a comprehensive look at sustainable practices in fashion. The multi-billion dollar fashion industry is in a powerful position to make significant changes to the social and physical environment that we all live in. The problems in creating clothing are overwhelming and systemic in all facets of production, retail, maintenance and then disposal, causing a crisis for environmental concerns. The designers featured in this exhibition are approaching these problems in their work; offering design solutions that are both aesthetically pleasing and viable as a fashionable option to the status quo. Information will be provided about the environmental issues that the fashion industry is grappling with, as well as possible solutions for future designers to contemplate in their own work. The exhibition hopes to inform the general public and encourage everyone to re-think their clothing purchases for a more sustainably stylish future.

<title>Beyond Fashion: Fiber and Fashion Art by Vincent Quevedo (4/29/2011 - 2/12/2012)</title>
            <link>http://cleveland.artsinohio.com/preview.php?id=75631&amp;type=e</link>
<description>&quot;Beyond Fashion: Fiber and Fashion Art by Vincent Quevedo&quot; are pieces from my past collections that are not an attempt to persuade viewers to accept my personal ideologies, but to recognize and distinguish the power of clothing relative to beauty, intrigue, intimacy and complexity. Although wearable, their intent includes a theatrical presence demanding a certain level of attention beyond that of ordinary clothing or art. This compilation also examines the potential of clothing as a sculptural entity dependent on visual cues in space. This is not to say these pieces have no meaning, indeed they do, but the literal or abstract presentation I leave for the viewer to define. These pieces are not conceptual in idealization but realized with the assuredness of my skillful eyes and hands. Each one is meant to have a story and/or provoke you to make one up. It is this story, limited only by your imagination, that gives importance to these pieces.

<title>On the Home Front: Civil War Fashion and Domestic Life September 30,2011 - August 26, 2012 ...</title>
            <link>http://cleveland.artsinohio.com/preview.php?id=78503&amp;type=e</link>
<description>On the Home Front focuses on the daily life and experiences of the American civilian population during the Civil War and in the years immediately following. The pieces on exhibit, including women's and children's costumes, supplemented with related photographs, decorative arts and women's magazines are organized thematically. Far from being a simple trivial diversion during such a critical period, fashion provides a unique window into the lived experience of Americans during the Civil War. Despite being far from the battlefields, women and children were deeply and immediately touched by the conflict.
One of the highlights of the exhibit is the Keckley quilt, made by Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley, a former slave who served as Mary Todd Lincoln's dressmaker. The quilt is believed to have been made from scraps of Mrs. Lincoln's dresses. Also on exhibit are Civil War uniforms; cloaks and wraps including a paisley shawl; underwear including corsets and crinolines; 4 wedding dresses; numerous children's outfits; accessories such as bonnets and shoes; and examples of hair jewelry. The exhibition is drawn primarily from the Kent State University Museum's world class collection of historic fashion, and also includes loans from the Western Reserve Historical Society and the Kent State University Libraries, Special Collections and Archives.
The exhibit will be accompanied by a full-color catalogue with close-up detailed images of many of the highlights of the show, available in the Museum Store.</description>

            <link>http://cleveland.artsinohio.com/preview.php?id=79188&amp;type=e</link>
<description>Project Mah Jongg is the first exhibition of its kind-taking visitors on an exploration of the game's cultural meanings through sight, sound, text, and play. The game of mah jongg is explored in dynamic formats throughout the exhibition, including 20th-century popular objects and a visitor-activated soundscape that features clacking tiles, exclamations from games by Jewish-American and Chinese-American players, reminiscences, and vintage music. Large-scale graphics by Isaac Mizrahi, Maira Kalman, Bruce McCall, and Christoph Niemann illustrate mah jongg as an ongoing muse for contemporary artists. A game table at the core of the exhibition invites visitors to engage in the continuing tradition. The exhibition serves as historical treatment of the topic, a placeholder for memory, a generator of whimsy, and a stage set for the game's continuation. The environment conveys how mah jongg is much more than a game: it is a carrier of fantasy, identity, memory, and meaning.

Project Mah Jongg is made possible through the generosity of the National Mah Jongg League. Additional support is provided by Sylvia Hassenfeld and 2wice Arts Foundation. Exhibit design by Abbott Miller, Pentagram.

<title>Les Délices presents Caracteres de la Danse (1/28/2012)</title>
            <link>http://cleveland.artsinohio.com/preview.php?id=79993&amp;type=e</link>
<description>Caractères de la Danse is a lively program dedicated to music for dancing - from its social roots in the ballroom to the idiosyncratic, highly expressive music written for the first prima ballerinas on the theater stage. Simultaneously signaling power and grace, refinement and discipline, the art of dancing held a singular status at the court of Louis XIV. As an essential element in the ballroom and on the theater stage, music for dancing is at the heart of French baroque style.

Les Délices' program includes Rebel's &quot;Characters of the Dance&quot; (a fantasia choreographed for a single virtuoso dancer), solo suites for oboe and viol by Hotteterre and Herveloix de Caix, and the earthy, rollicking dances of Boismortier's Ballets de Village. Plus, the Muse of dance herself inspires Rebel's own trio, La Terpsichore. Baroque violinist Julie Andrijeski, gamba player Josh Lee, and harpsichordist Michael Sponseller join Les Délices' director and baroque oboist Debra Nagy.
